The ANTRAMS are said to have a family crest of a lamb with a ring around its
neck. A coat of arms - a bend argent on a field sable - is given on the
Internet. The Royal College of Arms records do not show ANTRAMs with the right
to bear a coat of arms. - Mark RIGHTON.

I guess that our ANTRAM ancestors arrived in England a long time ago from
County Antrim, Northern Ireland. Any comments?

"He was an impressive man. Had a degree from Glasgow University. He went to
North Wales and started a steel works, built railways and bridges. He was a
partner of Isambard Kingdom Brunel. He was also a Liberal MP for Shrewsbury a
couple of times. He had some beautiful properties. We went to see some of them.
The most beautiful was Pale Hall in Llanderfel, North Wales. It is now run as a
hotel. You can look it up, Pale Hall. The attention to detail is incredible, no
money spared! They used to have 32,000 acres with shooting rights. The whole
estate was sold to the Duke of Westminster, primarily for the shooting rights.
On the website there is a lot of historical interest. Queen Victoria came to
stay at the house." - MD.

Frost Place, Borough of Southwark, Surrey. d 31.1.1848.
Joshua was 18 in 1815, when many RN officers were put on half pay, including
his brothers; he probably thought that the Merchant Navy offered better
prospects. He must have been a competent sailor; 26 is very young to be a
Master Mariner.

He entered the Merchant Navy and soon became a Master Mariner. He was on the
British Honduras run, captaining the ROSALIND and PETREL for example, shipping
mahogany to England (1821-1837). This is how he met Elizabeth POTTS.

  Maritime records for Joshua ANTRAM:
  * 19.5.1823, a ship (unnamed) from Honduras discharged a cargo of mahogany
at Hull. Captain Joshua ANTRAM (aged 26). As he skippered ships taking mahogany
to England, this must be how he and Elizabeth POTTS met, and would explain what
attracted them to Burma: mahogany -> teak.
  * Lloyd's Register. Court of the King's Bench Guildhall 9.1.1824, Case of
MCGREGOR vs. THWAITES: Captain Joshua ANTRIM rescued the family of Thomas
CHALMERS from the Mosquito Coast from the failed Poyais colony in Honduras
waters on 29.7.1823. The parents died during the voyage back to England, but
Captain ANTRIM took the 3 children to Poplar and appeared as a witness in the
case.
  * Joshua ANTRIM captained the ROSALIND from Honduras in 1825. PRINCE, the
ship's owner, became bankrupt during the voyage. - If Joshua skippered ships
taking mahogany to England, this must be how he and Elizabeth met, and would
explain what attracted them to Burma: mahogany (teak).
  * Vol. 1, #1, July 1 1826:Shipping information, Belize Harbour, 1.7.1826:
Loading for Europe: "LADY MCWORTH", MONTGOMERY; "VESPER", TALBERT; "GLATTON",
LAWTON; "PETREL", ANTRAM; "VENERABLE", BURTON; "HELEN", COX; - many other
"SHIPS" and their MASTERS are named.
 * Vol. 1, #27, December 30: Passengers arrived:In the ARETHUSA, from
London, Mrs. ARROWSMITH, Mr. GLEIM, and the Miss POTTS (?). In the PETREL,
from London, Mrs. ANTRAM, and Masters John and Richard WARD.
  * Joshua frequently traded with Belize and took his pregnant wife home in
his ship PETREL. The PETREL left March 1827. It arrived Gibraltar from Honduras
on 24.4.1827, having passed a waterlogged hull at lat. 43 long. 35. The
PETREL's home port was Poole, Dorset.
  * A letter written by Joshua ANTRAM on 16.9.1830 complains about a tedious
voyage of 12 months. He therefore wasn't always enamoured by his profession.
  * Letter from William DEAN (husband of sister Ann 11514) 13.6.1831 mentions

Malden, Massachusetts] and his wife Emily show that three ships' captains
annoyed them by not helping them to move quickly from Moulmein to Rangoon.
Joshua's family left Madras for Moulmein 19.1.1847; he would have been more
interested in his own family than in the JUDSONs. Note the exchanges in some of
the correspondence:
JUDSON: Captain ANTRAM was to take passage in the ERWIN.
Emily JUDSON: Captain ANTRAM has sent word that he leaves tomorrow, and A's
servant made plenty of noise.
JUDSON: 29.1.1847. ANTRAM and the rest will be anxious to return.
JUDSON: 2.2.1847. Complains that he is being shuttled between the THISTLE,
the GYNE and the CITY OF LONDON by the Captains (ANTRAM & Co.).
Emily JUDSON: 22.2.1847. Calls the Captain of the CITY OF LONDON a 'regular
bear with a reckless character and a half-mutinous crew'. The Captain first
said JUDSON's goods had to be removed from the ship, and then said they could
remain.
JUDSON: 'But why? You said yesterday that they could not remain.'
ANTRAM: 'The truth is, Sir, my boys are bad fellows; they say they have
worked three Sundays and won't work today, and I can't make them.'

It is possible to conclude why the ANTRAM family went to Burma. Joshua ANTRAM
and his wife's family were involved in the mahogany trade. The Belizean slaves
were freed in 1833, which caused the mahogany trade to slump. The former slave
owners were compensated (see above) and the British were now interested in
Burmese teak as a replacement. The wood was widely used for shipbuilding,
furniture, etc.

Joshua ANTRAM is mentioned as the Master of the CALINDA in 1841 on the
Australia run.

Joshua was in London as late as 19.2.1842. Elizabeth ANTRAM (daughter) married
Robert SHEPPARD on 12.4.1847 in Moulmein. They therefore went there between
1842-47. Moulmein and the Tenassarim coast were ceded to Britain after the 1st
Anglo-Burmese War. Moulmein was the capital of British Burma from 1826-1852.
(There is still an ANTRAM Street there. - Gerry. Presumably named after
Joshua.) Joshua's name is not on the Masters & Mates list in 1845; he must have
resigned his commission to emigrate to Burma.

The family seems to have finally settled in Burma by 1847.

Passenger lists give the following:
Madras departure for Moulmein on the ERIN 23.6.1846: Captain ANTRAM
Madras departure for Moulmein on the CITY OF LONDON 19.1.1847: Mrs. ANTRAM
(Elizabeth POTTS), Misses ANTRAM (Elizabeth 11516 2, & Amelia 11516 3) and
Mr. ANTRAM. The boys are not mentioned. Mr. ANTRAM is probably Master John
Potts ANTRAM, [11516 5].

Joshua ANTRAM's presence in Burma in 1846 was confirmed by Colesworthy GRANT,
writing of his travels through Burma in 1846, he states 16 August: 'Delay in
Captain ANTRIM's departure for Maulmein enables me to add that I have paid my
first visit to the far-famed Golden Pagoda of Rangoon.'

Records of Old Moulmein state that the Anglo-Vernacular School was in ANTRAM
Road in 1880.

His wife, 2 daughters and probably John arrived in Burma in 1847, Charles and
Edward between 1847-1851. Joshua seems to have had ended his permanent naval
career by 1845 and concentrated his efforts on the new teak trade. He was
drowned in the Rangoon River at Botataung in 1854. Botataung = 1000 Military
Leaders in Burmese. Joshua could be interred in the Rangoon Cantonment
Cemetery.

The British built a pontoon bridge across the Rangoon River after the
annexation. Tradition relates that Joshua fell off this bridge during its
construction and drowned in 1854. This cannot be true, as Joshua tragically
died in 1848, a few months after his family's arrival in Burma. India Office
records his death on 31.1.1848 and his burial on 1.2.1848 in Moulmein, before
Rangoon was annexed. No cause of death is given. It sounds as though he was
drowned in Moulmein and Charles and Edward came to Burma after hearing this
news.
Elizabeth (aged 50) was now left in a strange country with 5 children, the
eldest of whom was 21. There was probably nothing left for her in England, with
their house and possessions sold. She must have received help from her
husband's naval colleagues, e.g. Captain Robert SHEPPARD (aged 31), who married
her eldest daughter and employed her son Edward as a Second Mate on his ship,
the MONARCH.

The annexation of Burma was completed after the 3rd Anglo-Burmese War
(1885-6), and the last king was deposed and exiled.

John Potts ANTRAM [11516 5] took his widowed mother back to England 1861-1863
when the Indian Navy was disbanded, after having lived in Burma for about 15
years. He married in England, had 2 children, both born in England, and died in
Devon in 1881. Elizabeth ANTRAM, ne POTTS, also died in Devon in 1881. The
rest of the family ended their days in Burma, except possibly Amelia Patience
ANTRAM, who may also have returned to England with them. No death or marriage
records have been found for her in either England or Burma.

The ANTRAM family originated in Hampshire, the men from Portsmouth, due to the
Royal Navy connection. The POTTS family were from County Durham. The family
surname was never POTTS-ANTRAM.

and is described as a white man aged 66, i.e. born 1755, in County Durham.
He was listed as a magistrate on 20.7.1812. John POTTS Sr. was a slave owner
(Indian = Maya). Letters document the efforts of his son John POTTS, Esquire,
of Belize, to recover from the British government the value of certain Indian
slaves bequeathed to him and his two sisters, Mrs. ANTRAM and Mrs. ADAM, by
their father's estate.

(1845) and Elizabeth SPEER (1847).
(A church plaque gives Thomas BARNEBY as the Rector, but this is not the
minister's name on the marriage record.)
A possible death record also estimates a birth in 1796.

The family's fortunes fell when the Belize mahogany trade slumped after the
emancipation of the slaves. Joshua initially transferred to a passenger service
between England and Australia. The Burmese teak and the family's experience
with mahogany attracted him to Burma. He began contemplating a move in 1835,
and could have first visited Burma in 1837 as tradition says. The fact that the
children were in boarding schools in London in 1841, with no mention of the
parents, suggests that perhaps the parents went there first to see how things
were.

Cousins Thomas & John POTTS were two of the 85 colonists who signed Rear
Admiral Sir William BURNABY's Code of Laws in 1765.

Thomas is not listed as a passenger. They left Belize March 1827. No record of
any ANTRAM births in Belize.

Their 4 younger children were all baptised on the same day. This supports the
idea that the parents were planning to emigrate and baptised them quickly.
The 1841 census shows the parents and eldest son were not in England in 1841.
Yet the Joshua ANTRAM above captained a ship out from England in 1839.
Another newspaper report gives his name as Joseph (see above). Was this a
different man? What happened after the baptisms? The 1841 census lists
children 2 Elizabeth, 3 Amelia, 4 Charles, 6 Edward, at 2 schools in Lambeth.
So the parents left these 4 behind at school and took baby John Potts with
them - probably to Burma. Joshua Thomas would have been listed in the census if
he were "under training" in England. No death record was found for him, but he
must have died, or else he was also with his parents in Burma in 1841.
None of the names are listed in the 1861 census. All the children
had therefore left England between 1841-1851. The 1871 census lists John Potts
ANTRAM and his mother Elizabeth, who both must have returned between 1861 and
1871.

Irrawaddy Flotilla Company manager SWANN wrote in May 1864: Since the
government gave over the Steam Flotilla to the present proprietors, Captain
ANTRAM has acted as the Commander of the (illegible) and COL PHAYRE. In the
latter he had been in charge for over 3 years and during the last year in which
the mails were carried under the old postal contract, he worked the service
twice a month between Rangoon and Thayetmo with most creditable energy. With
passengers of all kinds, but more especially those who travel first class, he
is very popular and he also stands well in the opinion of native shippers. From
the heavy draught of the COL PHAYRE, Captain ANTRAM has not been able to take
his vessel to Mandalay in the dry season, but notwithstanding this the earnings
throughout the year are fair compared with those of the other steamers. As a
Commander he has been successful, never having damaged his steamer in any way
and he has always shown a disposition to put first his best exertions to
advance the interests of the Company. He takes command of the RANGOON when
ready. His salary is R300 per month with 2% commission on the steamer's gross
earnings minus the Government Bills from both of which sources of income he has
received during this year about R510 monthly.
  1865-66 Captain of SS DAMOODAH.
Not recorded after this date. This shows that Thacker's Directory is not
complete as he was still with the Irrawaddy Flotilla Co. in 1878.
His marriage (bachelor aged 32) & death certificates describe him as a
Captain in and the Commander of the Irrawaddy Flotilla Company respectively,
and both give an age that corresponds to a birth in 1838/9, i.e. he would have
been 14 or younger when his eldest was born. This seems highly unlikely.
He was the Second Mate on the MONARCH in 1851 (see the story about the
husband of his sister 11516 2 Elizabeth). This proves he could not have
been born in 1839. A Second Mate cannot be 12 years old, and it again implies
that Simon Edward and Edward Joshua are the same man, in which case a birth in
1831 makes more sense. He could have joined the Royal Navy and then have come
to Burma when he was easily old enough to have had children.

It cannot be certain that his children all had the same mother but, if they
did, three children suggest a settled family with a common law wife and not a
casual relationship. Hilda ANTRAM (wife of Valentine Hugh) suggested an
association with a woman named Daw GOON prior to his marriage in 1871. Daw
means 'Aunty', and is usually given to a more mature lady. A suggestion is not
proof (-Elizabeth nee POTTS's mother may be Sally BALDWIN).
Daw GOON sounds more like an ayah (nanny). 'Ma' means Miss, and would be used
for a common law wife. Note Ma HURON (wife of Charles John), Ma KHIN in the
FOWLE case and Ma YEW below.

"My uncle Teddy ANTRAM and family and aunt Vida ANTRAM [11516 614] died on
the HUKAWNG Valley route, known as the Valley of Death. My father, mum and us
four kids (then) trekked the Tamu/Assam route, a far better one, though there
were a few deaths along the way.
We took the Tamu route, had to do a double march through Imphal as the Japs
had bombed that city - to Dimbrugarh - then to Dimmerpur where we were all
loaded into a train to Calcutta - our party was the last to leave Dimmerpur
when the Japs bombed that place - my parents and us children were put onto a
cattle wagon the last attached to that train! I was among many who was taken
directly to the Loretta Convent hospital with malaria! It took a month to
arrive in Calcutta.
I was about 12 yrs old, remember that trek very well. We young kids used to
get up early to start our trek to the next camp before nightfall and grab our
bunks (bamboo huts put by the Brits and the Ceylon Tea Co. who were at every
Camp dishing out food and places for us each night.) We also had to get off
the walk paths when the Jap planes fly over us, and hide among trees not to be
seen. We got to be good at being able to distinguish the sounds of the Jap
plane and that of the Allies (USA & Brit). The Japs had a "tin-ee whining"
sound and they flew low we could sometimes see their logos the Sun painted on
the wings!" - Gerry [11516 6121], 2011.

survived. These 3 reached India by various means after the Japanese invasion.
The rest of the family were to take a plane to India, but there was no room for
their father. They all then left the plane, with the exception of the

India, viz.: Edward Charles [11516 611], Vida Ellen [11516 614], his 2nd wife

whole family had perished on the trek between Shinbwiyang and Tagap Ga
June/July 42. Vida Ellen [11516 614] was not mentioned.
The book: 'Trek out of Burma, 1942, Evacuees List' gives 7 entries with the
surname ANTRAM, including 11516 6114 Miss A. ANTRAM.
Records found of 19 children born in the Bengal Presidency in 1875-1910 with
the surname ANTRAM, none of whom can be fitted into the family tree as it
stands. These must be members of other families. The first ANTRAM recorded as
being born in the Bengal Presidency is an Emily ANTRAM in 1869.

Grace CARMICHAEL gracemizpah"att"aol.com (1st contact 12.6.2011), whose
husband descends from Mattie's brother Sperodon CALOGREEDY. Grace has put
together their tree & shared info with me: At 13, Meti (as she was known by
the Burmese), a close playmate of Princess Supayalat, daughter of King MINDON,
helped restore her father's lease on the Mu Forest, & thus his wealth. Her
advice was sought by many who wished to keep their heads on their shoulders.
A keen photographer, Queen Supayalat built her a darkroom on the N side of the
palace pavillion. Later King THIBAW made her a European maid-if-honour to the
court. She was styled Thamigyi, a term of great honour.
Captain Simon Edward ANTRAM was a favourite of King MINDON. When Matilda
married him, she was a spinster aged 17. Her true story is told in the novel
"THE LACQUER LADY" by F. Tennyson JESSE (1880-1958). The Captain BAGSHAW of the
book is obviously based on Edward ANTRAM Sr. He is described as a large, florid
Englishman with dark hair and light eyes, bald suffering from gout, Protestant,
in the Royal Navy Reserve, wealthy, much older than her, a bit gauche, but
kindly in his way. According to this book, after her husband died, she fell in
love with a rep from France, his jilting her leading to her disclosure of a
secret treaty between Burma & France, followed by invasion by England & the
removal of the Burman royal family. (The Captain attended the King MINDON's
funeral). The author met Mattie in 1929, who must have given her this d
escription and the idea for the book. He is called Captain Silas BAGSHAW in the
book. She is also mentioned in 'The Stone of Heaven' by Adrian LEVY and Cathy
Scott CLARK.

In 1887 Matilda P ANTRAM m Henry NOYCE d 24.5.1936 He served under Col. SLADEN

Silverton, Mandalay. She was also known as Mattie ANTRAM and Granny NOYCE. They
had 2 sons, Edgar c1887 & Herbert Edward d 1927 of Blackwater fever.
A witness named ANTRAM was called in the FOWLE vs. FOWLE divorce case,
Calcutta 1878. Support was given to Mr. FOWLE's friend Mahkin of Moulmein.
No photographic records are known to have survived, but his death certificate
states that he died of "fatty degeneration of the heart". This would confirm
that he was a large, ponderous sort of man - thin men do not die of this cause.
  CALOGREEDY:
The historical facts distorted by Dagon Khin Khin Lay have been accepted
without further questioning by later novelists. A writer of Myanmar historical
fiction during the closing years of the 20th century, Seint (Pyin-nya-yei)
wrote a popular novel entitled Daing Khin Khin. First published in 1976 it has
been reprinted 4 times, the 4th edition appearing in the year 2000. This novel
is an interweaving of parts of the plot and the mixing of some characters from
Dagon Khin Khin Lay's Sarsodaw with the plot and characters of the English
novelist F. Tennyson JESSE's (1888-1958) "The lacquer lady", where the true
story of Mattie Calogreedy, a European maid-of-honour at the court of King
THIBAW and Queen Supayalat, is narrated against the political background of
the rivalries and intrigues between two European colonial powers, Britain and
France, which led to the British annexation of Myanmar in 1886.
Four CALOGREEDYs found, one generation younger:

Lena Ida CALOGREEDY b 15.7.1892, bp 10.8.1892, d'r of John Lewis CALOGREEDY

U KHANTL, writing Mattie's obituary in a newspaper (1928), described Edward

disposition and was noted for his huge physical bulk. He was the biggest man
afloat on the river.
