A. SOURCES This family tree was sent to me 20.8.2003 by *15(10)21 Ken SONNE sonne"att"mail.com (sometimes referred to as KS below) as the WORD file descendofjameswhitson.rtf by generation & its text version descendantsofJamesWhitson.txt I have reformatted it as this html file. He first made contact 10.8.2003. Large family trees are generally the result of the labour of many. The main other contributors that I know of for this tree are *1512 12 Margaret MACPHERSON at margmac"att"xtra.co.nz 2003 *1514 11 2 Wendy MEASON *1263 2-sp Velma Prictor SAVAGE 2005: Katui, RD6, Dargaville & *1215 24-sp Barry PYCROFT 2012 barry"att"pycroft.co.nz http://www.pycroft.co.nz - click on Dynamic Family Tree, then his wife's name Dawn Louice NEILSON for her ancestors. Info he has sent is marked BP. Some info on graves in Dunedin has come from Ian JOHNSTONE (1124 42 of ../whitson/whitson.html) and from http://www.cityofdunedin.com/cemetery * 30.5.08 Myrna SWANGER mswanger"att" bigpond.net.au sent me the WHITSON-DEANS tree as a gedcom with much new info'. Info from this is marked MS. WHAT'S NEW? 19.8.2010 Thanks to 15113 Rae PATERSON for a major update giving the current generation. We owe all these folk many thanks for sharing the fruit of their labour.

B. PRIVACY ISSUES Feel free to contact me to have your details included or removed from this tree. I have taken a cutoff of 1950. Beyond this I don't show details of the living without permission. Sometime parents or sibs give permission. This can always be reversed by the individual. I dont put in "adopted" unless requested to, as this can cause distress.

C. DATES, ABBREVIATIONS USED, NUMBERING SYSTEMS ABBREVIATIONS bp baptised c about m married m1 married first m2 married second NZ New Zealand sp- spouse When known, the dates and places of birth and death follow each name. NUMBERING SYSTEMS Consider the example 112 3--Agnes DEANS (1855-21.9.1855 Blanerne, Bunkle & Preston, Scotland) The "3--" indicates 3rd generation from the initial couple, 0 0--Helen WHITSON m sp-John SIVES/SIVESS The number 112 indicates the person is 2nd child of person 11 (who is the 1st child of the 1st child of the initial couple 0). So to find the parents of 112 one can search back for "2--". To find their children, search forward for "4--" until the initial number no longer starts 112. To find the sibs of 112 search for "3--" until the initial number no longer starts 11. I insert a blank after each 4th digit for ease of reading these ID numbers. DATES I use the English convention: the day precedes the month.

They arrived Dunedin, NZ 23.9.1858 on the ship "JURA" with 2 chn. His parents
3 sisters, 3 brothers, & the family of his brother John arrived Otago 24.9.1860
on the HENRIETTA. In an 1869 document of the Provincial Govt of Otago listing
debtors of passage money (Assisted immigration passage money account), the name
Alex appears against his parents & brother John. So it seems he acted as a
guarantor. Alex & Ann lived in NE Valley, Dunedin where some chn were b, then
moved to Lee Stream, a very hilly area a few miles inland from Dunedin, & began
farming. Succeding generations have farmed there including great great grandsons
today. They had 8 chn. - MS.

1.6 DEANS of Kirkstyle, Riccarton, Scotland and Homebush, Christchurch, NZ Rae PATTERSON alerted me to the damage done by the Christchurch earthquake of 6.9.2010 to Homebush, since 1851 the home of a DEANS family.

Rae emailed me this photo of the Homebush after being wrecked by the quake of 4.9.10 - from Timaru Herald 06-09-10.

"Both [1 and 3] attended schools at Kilmarnock and Colmonell and then undertook
legal training. However, they expressed interest in emigrating and in
preparation for this were placed on good farms in Scotland. The colonising
proposals of the NZ Company appealed to them. William bought land orders in the
Wellington scheme in 1839 and sailed from London in one of the earliest company
ships, the AURORA, in September that year, arriving at Port Nicholson
(Wellington) on 22 January 1840...." - For more see

The DEANS have farmed Homebush since 1851. They leased and then bought 13,350
